MARC RIBOT Soundtracks II (Tzadik, 2003)

by Efrén delValle

Marc Ribot is not only one of the most in-demand guitarists today, he has also become an accomplished composer in his own right.
Following his previous collection of movie soundtracks, Shoe String Symphonettes, Ribot has gathered a fantastic mishmash of miniatures ranging from bluesy tracks to electronic beats to shakuhachi flute pieces. Paradoxically, the overall sound is cohesive and works like a neat portrait of the composer’s musical view. This time, as oppossed to the previous volume, the results are far more accessible, both in terms of sound (the production is impeccable) and form. From the circus beat-up keyboard of “Nausea” to the halo of mistery of “Savannah”; from the electronic Miles-evoking mood of “Urbanight” to the acoustic intimacy of “Pensando”; from the enigmatic atmosphere of “Requiem for Eitan” to the smooth jazz of “Penitant Skyline”, the album is an exquisite compendium of genres filtered through Ribot’s idiosincratic compositional style. Soundtracks II sounds eccentric and yet honest, hermetic and yet pleasant, ecclectic and yet coherent. And you can’t say that of many albums today.
